What colour paint should I choose?

Sometimes the thought of choosing colours can be paralysing so I thought I'd share a few ways of making it less stressful.

A great starting place is buying or borrowing a few home magazines and gathering some colour cards from a DIY shop. Here are a few ways that you can use them:

The ‘let it percolate’ way

Have them lying around and flick through them every now and again and see if the same colours attract your eye multiple times. If you keep thinking ‘yes – I like that’ then the chances are that that these colours are worth considering.

The ‘I love a process’ way

Set up a spreadsheet, diarise some time in your diary and get out the post-its. Methodically look through each resource and record what you do and don’t like and why.

The ‘we don’t want argue about it anymore’ way

You may be trying to make the decision with someone else and it’s proving difficult. One option is to try looking through everything separately and make a note of what you do and don't like.

If you don't like a colour is there a reason? Was every childhood room magnolia and that’s why you rail against it? It might be the perfect neutral tone that sets off the other colours you have chosen, so come to the process with an open mind.

Set aside some dedicated time to go through them together and be prepared to say what you do and don’t like and why. Hopefully this will narrow down your options to colours you both like.

The ‘it’s only paint’ way

If you choose a colour and in 6 months you really don’t like it, you can paint over it. I understand it’s not ideal but once the prep and woodwork are done painting the walls is the fastest part of the job. I have been known to do this in my own home!

The ‘I’m not going to overthink it’ way

I often say this to customers, especially when they have gone through every shade of a neutral colour. If you look at any room in your home that is painted a neutral colour, and look at each wall as a separate entity you will see that they appear to be totally different shades.

This is because the type of lighting, angle of light and time of day will continually be changing the look of your room. So, agonising over the exact shade is not always relevant. You want proof? Try putting your finger across the line where the grey boxes meet. They are the same colour!

Above all, try to to make it an enjoyable part of the process!
